the life of nutella
With a strong history, Nutella is a worldwide favourite. Today, Nutella is sold in over 75 countries across the globe and is the No.1 spread across Europe. In Italy, France and Germany Nutella is sold in 'Nutellerias'; cafés that only specialise in all things Nutella! Read on to find out about how Nutella was created and the origin of the word 'Nutella'. Nutella, in its original form, was first created in the 1940's by Mr. Pietro Ferrero, a patisserie maker and founder of the Ferrero company. At the time, cocoa was in short supply due to rationing during World War II which meant cocoa beans were not readily available. So Pietro Ferrero mixed toasted hazelnuts with cocoa, cocoa butter and vegetable oils to create 'Pasta Gianduja'.Gianduja is a delicious, silky smooth, hazelnut based Italian chocolate and is a speciality of the Piedmont region of Italy. It is typically made using around 50% hazelnuts and uses only hazelnuts from this region.
In 1949 Ferrero altered the original recipe so it could be spread easily on bread. This was known as 'Supercrema Gianduja'. Eventually in 1964 in recognition of the international appeal of the unique hazelnut taste, the product was re-named Nutella.
Over the years Nutella has evolved to what you see today – a delicious hazelnut spread which provides a source of slow release energy.
